While planning the exhibition in AFRICA/NOW: Contemporary Art from Africa 2008-2009 we realised that in addition to presenting the artists and their works in an exhibition, it was also important to introduce the public and art critics to the raging debate on the authenticity of contemporary African art and the pros and cons of formal art training for African artists. And equally important to make the exhibition available beyond its exhibition period and so the idea for the AFRICA/NOW exhibition book was born.
In addition to essays on African art, the AFRICA/NOW catalogue presents the works of 35 contemporary artists from 10 countries in East, West and Southern Africa. The works are by self-taught and trained artists, young and old, established as well as unknown artists. The styles range from popular through documentary to painterly, political and social. The works are primarily by artists living and working in Africa.
